10/17/00
We woke up this morning to find ourselves anchored near Phillipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side of St. Maarten. Divided in two, St. Martin, the northern half is controlled by the French while St. Maarten, the southern side is controlled by the Dutch.

We decided to try something different and had a sit-down breakfast at Lumiere's. The food was good, as usual. After breakfast and packing for the day, we caught a tender and hit St. Maarten.

Three cruise ships were all anchored here today.  It really looked neat.

Disney offered many different excursions, at various additional costs, of course. We opted not to do any and just strolled the downtown area. aimed squarely at the tourist trade, St. Maarten shopping is mainly jewelry, clothing, tobacco, perfume and alcohol. We bought the requisite tourist shirts, including some that change color when exposed to the sun - very cool. We'll see if Michigan sun is intense enough.

After a few hours walking the city, we were getting hungry. We considered the beach, but decided that the sun was a tad too intense. We caught a tender back to the ship, grabbed lunch on deck and enjoyed a fun afternoon at the pool. It was really nice as the crowds were ashore, leaving room for family fun in the pool, even if the sun was bright.

Tonight, our dinner was scheduled for Parrot Cay and the Tropicalifragilistiexpealodotious tropical evening, Arlona & I had 6:30 reservations for Palo, the adults only restaurant on 10 Aft, with a sweeping panoramic view off the stern. We took the kids to Parrot Cay and got them started, Sasha and Romulus took good care of them as we had a wonderful, romantic dinner for two overlooking the lights of St. Maarten. Arlona looked especially great in her new red gown.

Arlona had a pasta dish with a light tomato sauce. I enjoyed a seafood platter featuring halibut, sea scallops and lobster. For dessert, we each had chocolate soufflé. Our waiter, Robert from France, also brought a tiramisu for us to split. (the red sauce ran when we tipped the plate)

We quickly went tropical after dinner, picked up the kids and saw the movie, Remember the Titans starring Denzel Washington. This was the onboard entertainment this evening. We we arrived in the room, we found the second creature for our towel menagerie, a snake wearing my sunglasses!

After the movie, the kids went to their club for evening play with black lights and glowing things. Arlona & I strolled the deck during the evening tropical deck party and even did an impromptu dance to Rockin' Robin.

We went to the aft overlook as we sailed around 11pm en route to St. Thomas.  We watched the lights of St. Maarten get smaller as we gathered the kids and grabbed a snack at the evening dessert buffet.

Tomorrow morning, we hit St, Thomas.
