Tuesday, July 3, 2001The rain ended and the cloud cover kept the temperatures up in the 50's. By the time our eggs and hash browns breakfast was over, the sky was breaking up. After chapel, blue sky was peeking out all over. Arlona ran the girls into town to pick up a few items while Alex relaxed in the tent. The girls visited the nature center and the craft center in the morning.
Alex needed some alone time and relaxed by himself. Arlona & Garry enjoyed a horseshoe match
that Arlona won handily. We also joined a family camp foursquare game. A bit later on, the girls took out a paddleboat
and got caught in a fierce splash fight as the wet-bottom squad clearly shows.
Lunch consisted of chicken salad pita sandwiches, which the kids, of course, avoided like the plague. PB&J filled the bill for them. Afternoon took Garry & Arlona to Tustin Trails golf course for 9 holes of relaxation. Alex hit the rifle range and the girls hung out. Later, the kids hit the beach for the remainder of the afternoon. The day turned out sunny and in the mid-70's with a gentle breeze. All-in-all, great weather. Dinner tonight was the western ho-down at the ranch camp area. Dogs and burgers on the grill with chips and sherbet were on the menu.
The kids hung with Bethanie Fraser, a camp counselor we met last year.
After chow, they held a bobbing for apple contest in a trough filled with ice water. The real competitors tried bobbing for carrots (they sink). The kids all took a pony ride.
They held the requisite tug-of-war competition
and a fun horse mounting competition. A three-person team has to mount a single horse in the best time. The winning team, all core camp staffers, did it in 2.91 seconds. Their winning technique put all three behind the horse, spaced about five feet apart. When the bell sounded, they all took off running and vaulted over the horse's rump onto the horse's back. Janelle competed on a family camp team.
After the competitions, we took a hayride around the camp and then went to evening chapel.
After chapel,
we had Chex mix snack on the deck overlooking the lake. We gathered around the campfire and enjoyed the stars and a nearly full moon. We were also treated to a spectacular light show as thunderstorms passed to the south, lighting the backs of the clouds that were already silhouetted by the moon. |
