World Finalists 23rd place! State Champions! Miranda participated on an Odyssey of the Mind (OM) team during fourth grade. If you don't know about OM, visit their Web site at www.odysseyofthemind.org. Their problem this year was CustOMer Service:
In addition to their log-term problem described above, they also participate in a spontaneous problem where they are given one minute to think of answers and two minutes to give as many answers as they can. They are give points for each answer and additional points if the answer is deemed creative. On Saturday, Mar 6, 1999, Miranda's team competed in the Region II competition. The came out with a gold medal, finishing first among the 35 teams in their division. This is quite a accomplishment! They did well in the long-term problem and did extremely well in their spontaneous. Because the world competition is still underway, we can't revel any secrets about their problem here. They went on to the State Competition on April 17, 1999.
In the state competition, the team performed extremely well and placed second in their long-term problem and also second in spontaneous. In addition, the team was evaluated on the overall style on their long-term performance. The placed first in style. After all the points were tallied, the team placed first, ahead of 28 other Division 1 (elementary school) teams.
On to the World Finals!!! Over May 26-30, the team competed in Knoxville, TN in the Division 1 Customer Service World Finals. The team performed better that they had ever done. They placed 23rd out of 63 teams. There were a number of ties in the event. We are extremely proud of Miranda and the entire team. It is quite an accomplishment to say that you are 23rd best in the entire world!
