Pinewood 99

Home Up Alex 6th B'day Floor Hockey 99 Pinewood 99

Saturday, March 13, 1999 marked Alex's first entry into the Pinewood Derby.  The cars are all made out of a simple pine block.  The scouts (and parents) work on the design together.  The cars have to meet specific weight, size and construction criteria.  Our Pack, 640, uses a six lane track.

Here's the view down the track: And back up:

Alex chose one of his Hot Wheels cars as a model, challenging Dad to come close to the design.  He decided on green as the color and 16 for his number.

The car proved to be quite fast, tying in several of the elimination heats.  In the end, his car was eliminated from the Pack competition.

Non-winning cars then competed in individual Den races.  Alex's car made it to the finals.  You can see Alex's car win the Den elimination heats.  His car wins on the left and then again on the right.

Ultimately, he went on to the Den finals, but was just edged out by another.  Here are the first and second heats of the finals.

All-in-all, it was a pretty good showing for his first outing.  Plus, we picked up some design tips for next year...
